How rankings work in the app

The app shows three independent rankings. They are calculated by different rules and complement each other: the Kiss & Cry ranking measures the best elements and components of the last twelve months, the PZŁF ranking is the federation's own, and the medal ranking counts the podiums of the current season.

Kiss & Cry Ranking

Our own ranking of the best elements and components of the last twelve months. It is not an official ranking of any federation.

Idea. An index of what a skater can do at their best: for each of fourteen parts of a programme it takes the skater's best score of the last twelve months, and adds the fourteen up.

The fourteen parts:

  • six jumps: Axel, Lutz, Flip, Loop, Salchow and Toe loop
  • a two-jump combination and a three-jump combination
  • a spin, a step sequence and a choreographic sequence
  • three components: Composition, Presentation and Skating Skills

How it is counted:

  • An element counts with its score from the protocol — base value plus GOE.
  • A jump inside a combination also competes for its own jump's part, with its share of the combination's score.
  • A component counts with the panel's mark out of 10, not with the factored score.
  • The best value of each part is chosen separately, from any competition in the twelve months, and the fourteen values are added up.

Details and limits:

  • The ranking is recalculated every Monday, from the twelve months up to that day. A competition skated during the week appears in it the following Monday.
  • A part the skater did not perform in the twelve months is taken from their most recent earlier competition in which it appears. A skater with no competition at all in the twelve months scores 0.
  • A step sequence and a choreographic sequence are two separate parts. A choreographic spiral sequence counts as the choreographic sequence.
  • Only singles is ranked; pairs and ice dance have no Kiss & Cry place.
  • A skater has a place worldwide and a place within their nation.
  • Source — the official competition protocols loaded into the app's database.

Interpretation. The ranking reflects the peak quality of each part, regardless of the total score of any one skate.

PZŁF Ranking

The federation's official ranking.

What is shown. The places published by the Polish Figure Skating Association (PZŁF) in its own tables — one for each discipline and level.

Important:

  • The method and the points are the federation's; the app does not recalculate them, it only shows them.
  • The app reads the federation's ranking every Monday, so a change the federation publishes during the week appears the following Monday.

Medal Ranking

The medal table of the current season.

What counts. Every first, second and third place in a competition of the current season that is in the app's database — national and international alike. A season starts on 1 July.
A pair's medal counts for each of the two partners.

Sorting rules:

  • First by the number of gold medals.
  • If tied — by silver.
  • Then — by bronze.
  • Then by medals won in a category's additional groups, which do not count in the three numbers above.
  • Then by Kiss & Cry ranking points.
  • Skaters still level after all of this share a place.

The ranking is recalculated every Monday.

Why rankings can differ

Different purposes. The Kiss & Cry ranking measures the peak quality of each part of a programme; the official ranking shows the position in the federation's records; the medal ranking reflects actual podiums of the season.

Different periods. Kiss & Cry — the last twelve months; medals — the current season; official — as defined by the federation.

Different units. A sum of element scores and component marks vs. official points and places vs. counts of gold, silver and bronze medals.

Sources and data accuracy

Competition protocols and the federation's official publications are used as primary sources.
